Ogden High Marching Band Boosters

Welcome to the Band Boosters. We are excited to have you join us and support the award-winning marching band. There is a lot of work involved in making things happen, and we need a little help from everyone. Browse through the descriptions below and see what fits your skills and interests. Then, take a moment to fill out the Sign Up form so we can have your contact information. Thanks!

Food

The food committee provides snacks and lunches during band camp, and serves lunch on competition Saturdays. They also help with planning and serving dinner at our Friends & Family dinner show in the fall.

Transportation

The transportation committee is a group of parents who have trucks capable of pulling our two band trailers to competitions. We need 2 volunteers each Saturday from September 21 through November 1, and 2 folks willing to transport the trailers over our 2-night trip to St. George on November 7-9. The trailers weigh up to 6,000 pounds, with a lot of weight on the tongue. You also need an electronic brake controller. Most 1/2-ton trucks handle them just fine. The ball size is 2-5/16".

Fundraising

Parents on the fundraising committee help brainstorm fundraising ideas. They organize the work that needs to be done and then recruit and delegate! Everyone helps us raise funds to pay for our St. George trip, instrument repair and replacement, trailer maintenance, and various other needs throughout the year. If you are on this committee, you are an organizer, and not expected to do it all on your own.

Prop Construction/Handyman

We need a few folks who are handy with tools to help us assemble and/or build our props for the season, as well as repair miscellaneous items, like the carts with wheels that are used to move equipment around on the field. If you have skills in this area, please consider donating a little time to this task.

Competition Day Support

Competitions are on Saturdays from September through the first week of November.  Our performance time at the competition is announced about two weeks before the date, so we do not know the exact time of day until it gets close.

You are responsible for your own transportation to the event. I like to check with the trailer drivers to see if they have room for me to ride with them. I find this is a good way to get to know some other parents. If you do not want to commit to such a long schedule, you can certainly drive yourself. We need you at the event, already parked and having walked over to where the band is set up in the trailer parking lot, about ten minutes before the warm up time. When you find the band, make sure to get your entrance pass. Most competitions require you to have credentials to enter the field, even if you are helping the band with their equipment. If you do not get a free pass, you will need to go to the entrance gate and pay admission. Sometimes there is a booth near the band entrance where you can pay as well. We will try to provide admission passes for all of our helpers, so be sure to find Mr. Renda or another parent to get yours.

The pit is all of the keyboards, xylophones, and other special percussion stuff along with our amplification system that goes in the front of the field for our performance. There is a lot of stuff to move for the pit and for our props.  We only have a certain amount of time to do this before we are penalized for taking too long, this is why we need ten helpers each time. You will help the band move the stuff from the trailers to the our warm up area, and then from the warm up area to the edge of the field. We wait here until our entrance time, then we quickly move all the stuff onto the field for the pit kids to set up. They can tell you exactly where to put things once we get out there; we just need bodies to help move stuff.

Once everything is on the field, you can go to the bleachers and watch the performance. When the drum major turns around and bows at the end, you hurry back down to the field, make sure the equipment is unplugged from any cords it may have, and then hurry it off the field in the direction the staff points.

When all of the stuff is moved back to the trailer area, your obligation is fulfilled. You are welcome to leave at that point, or you can stay and eat with the band, and it is always fun to watch the awards. The band leaves after the awards for our division at all but two competitions. The competitions usually have concessions where you can buy food if you would like, and there are usually some booths selling souvenirs and stuff, too, so if you like to shop, come prepared.
